Backward Americans are Saving More During Great Recessionby Mogama News report says in the 1970's, Americans saved as much as 10% of their income. I think that was the period of the oil crisis, when the economy was suffering badly. Then when the economic prospects turned up in the 1980's, the savings rate began a downward trend. Research by the Utah Foundation has tracked the Americans' savings rate. From the 1980's through the boom of the 1990's until the third quarter of 2005, Americans' rate had tanked to a meager 1.2%. Then rumors of a recession started to roam in 2007, and the rate of savings moved up to 1.7% in 2007, 2.7% in 2008, and 4.2% in 2009. By the second quarter of 2009, the rate climbed to 5.4%. Yes and No, depending on the experts you listen to. In the July 25 edition of Deseret News of Salt Lake City, Utah, carries an article by Linda Thomson titled Americans saving more during tough economy.
